Our impression of Australia during these first few days in Sydney has been that it is so similar to the United States in so many ways. It really feels like we are just in a new city rather than an entirely new country. There are some drastic differences though that are immediately noticeable in our day to day activities – namely driving on the left side of the road (something we are still working on conquering) and the use of the metric system. Almost every decision involves a conversion from the metric system to the imperial system…what size diapers do I buy for my baby (i.e. how much does he weigh in kilograms)? what temperature do I set the oven at? how cold is the swimming pool? how much deli turkey do I buy? how far is the grocery store? … you get the point.
I’ve made myself a handy little cheat sheet to help with some of the most frequent conversions. I keep a printed version in my purse and another taped up to the refrigerator.
